Henry, born William Sydney Porter on September 11, 1862, in Greensboro, North Carolina, was an American short story writer known for his wit, wordplay, and twist endings. Henry explores the unexpected consequences of crime and how the actions of a spirited and imaginative child can outwit even the most desperate of men. Through this humorous and ironic story, O. Exhausted and disillusioned, Sam and Bill leave Summit, with Bill racing ahead towards the Canadian border. Bill pays the $250 to Dorset, who struggles to restrain his son as the kidnappers make their escape. Sam and Bill take Johnny home at midnight, and despite the boy's protests, they hand him over to his father. Both men, weary from their experience with the boisterous child, agree to the terms. When Sam returns to the cave with a reply from Ebenezer Dorset, they are shocked to find that instead of agreeing to the ransom, Dorset proposes that Sam and Bill return Johnny and pay him $250. The boy's antics, which include attempted scalping and constant demands for attention, wear down Bill's nerves. In the meantime, Bill is left to deal with the rambunctious and unpredictable Johnny. Sam decides to go to the nearby village of Poplar Cove to get a sense of how the kidnapping has affected the town and to send a ransom letter demanding $1,500 instead of the original $2,000. Sam and Bill are surprised by how much Johnny enjoys his time with them and how uninterested he seems in returning home. Johnny, a ten-year-old with an active imagination, quickly becomes absorbed in playing games and taking on the role of "Red Chief," an Indian character he creates. Sam and Bill abduct Johnny one evening, and despite the boy's spirited resistance, they manage to take him to a cave in the mountains. The two men believe that Ebenezer will pay a ransom of at least two thousand dollars for his son.

They choose a small town called Summit in Alabama as their target and decide to kidnap Johnny, the only child of an important citizen named Ebenezer Dorset. Henry, two men named Sam and Bill Driscoll hatch a plan to kidnap a child and demand a ransom in order to raise enough money to buy some land.
